Are you ready to become digitally mature?

This blog series looks at how digital transformation may impact the workforce and offers some insight into how to prepare for this as well as some pitfalls to avoid. This, the first of four articles, discusses the importance of having a digital vision and how this can impact your digital maturity.

Get on the right track

The way we do business is changing, and organizations need to adapt to stay relevant and survive. Digital transformation is everywhere. The promise of cost savings, increased productivity, and customer satisfaction is big news. Organizations are jumping in feet first, technology is advancing at speed, and you want to keep up. You don’t just want to survive, you want to thrive. So, how do you make sure that your digital transformation journey is on the right track?
 

What are you aiming for?

There are two digital transformation approaches, the first is focused purely on improving your internal operations, and the second is looking for ways to support your future growth. The ideal is to combine both approaches, but if this cannot be done then you need to have an agreed upon approach so that everyone is clear of the goal.
 
The importance of considering the organization is important to avoid difficulties such as delays and scalability. You need to join up your culture, leadership, structure, tasks, staff, organizational goals, and strategy, and look to transform your organization from the inside out.
 

Start at the beginning

While there is no magic spell for starting digital transformation, there are many areas to consider, including positive steps and things to avoid. Below we look at five of these.
 
  1. Clear and communicated digital strategy. I often see companies implementing a digital strategy just for the sake of having one, it is not an approach I’d advise.  Instead, look at real business problems, both yours and your customers’, and see if digital tools and processes can help. Every digital transformation journey must start with a vision and strategy that solves a real problem.
 
  1. Collaborative approach. Using a collaborative approach can remove silos and lead to positive cross functional working. I can find a good parallel in my own government’s digital strategy:  citizens should be able to communicate with offices and municipalities using an online tool, however if you want to fill in a form, you need to download data from another governmental office. The two offices are not interconnected so you are unable to complete the task. Removing silos and connecting the organization is important for significant, positive change to happen.
 
  1. Strong digital culture. Promoting innovation, risk-taking and adaptability, can support a digital culture within your company. Teaching and motivating staff to use new tools is important for digital integration, allowing an organization to embrace risk and use new technology while closing the skills gap.
 
  1. It’s not all about the technology. Technology is nothing without the right people. Attracting and retaining digital talent is important to digital transformation. Here at Y Soft we are going through our own digital transformation, and while we have the digital tools and plenty of smart, talented and digitally skilled people, this combination by itself is not enough. We need to look at the real day-to-day problems experienced by our employees and design the digital tools, applications and processes that help them succeed and grow.
 
  1. Don’t stop moving. It is also important to keep in mind that a vision must have space to evolve and grow over time. Technology is not going to stand still and neither should you. To stay relevant you need to adapt, change and move.
