Teachers, 3D printing and STEAM: Science

This series of articles takes an in depth look at each of the STEAM subjects and how YSoft be3D Academy supports educators in using 3D printing in classroom lessons. In this, the second article in the series, we look at be3D Academy’s resources for teaching science lessons.

From wow to how

Scientists make observations; they are curious and take notice of the world around them. They also think about their observations and ask questions that can be investigated. However, children are not born scientists. As a teacher, you show students how to make observations and challenge them to represent their observations, bringing science to life. From models of how nature works through to a collection of facts, students need an intellectual tool kit to make sense of the world in a particular way to explain and predict what is happening.

3D printing can transform your science lessons into active learning which encourages students to create their ideas and test their concepts. Using 3D printing in science lessons takes the subject from wow to how and sparks a real interest in the world. Such problem-based learning will help to adopt a positive attitude towards science.

be3D Academy – science lesson resources

Simply providing educators with 3D printers is not enough to encourage and support the full educational potential of 3D learning. be3D Academy integrates 3D printing into a learning environment to enhance student engagement on their learning journey.

Science lessons resources, like all our lesson plans, are fully aligned to core curriculums. Each be3D Academy lesson plan including a variety of tools, such as 3D model files, videos, student worksheets, and presentations to help introduce the 3D project to students. You can search lessons plans by subject and school grade level.

Let’s look at a few example lesson plans specific to science:

  • Mini grabber: teaches simple mechanisms as well as the physics and mathematics behind the operation of the mini grabber.
  • Mobility aids: while introducing disabilities and understanding accessibility, students will learn to work scientifically and pay attention to objectivity, accuracy, precision, repeatability and reproducibility as they create solutions to identified problems.
  • Rocket nozzles: introduces students to the science behind rocket engines and one very interesting component, a rocket engine exhaust nozzle. It covers forces, energy, and measurement.
  • Rubber band plane: looking at the basic theory of flight principles and simple aero foil designs, this project sees students assemble and test their designs. It then encourages further developments and discussion to evaluate designs.
  • Tidal defenses: students learn about tidal defenses and how shorelines and riverbanks are protected from hydraulic erosion.

3D Print Models

If you simply want to print 3D models as part of your own lesson, we also provide models files for you to be able to quickly print. You can access our 3D model database for free as part of be3D Academy. In the 3D model database, you can sort by printing time, amount of filament needed and other variables such as whether print supports are needed and if the model is composed of one piece or several.

Teaching the future with science

With 3D printing technology increasing student comprehension and engagement, your science classes are ready to be transformed. The projects available in be3D Academy can make teaching using 3D printing easier by giving you the tools and resources you need. Let us give you more time to focus on carrying out the important job of teaching.

Learning in 3D

3D printing creates a productive educational experience. It can turn students from to active classroom participants. Because 3D design and printing will be a crucial component of many jobs, students with early exposure to 3D technologies will be uniquely prepared to excel in this exciting future. 3D printing is having an enormous impact on all industries and professions. In terms of supporting teaching, 3D printing provides problem solving, creativity, innovation, and design thinking through hands-on learning opportunities.

Here at Y Soft we are working with educators to continue developing the integration of 3D printing technology with science education to increase student interest in STEAM subjects and participation in STEAM professions. Our holistic approach includes the safe and secure YSoft be3D eDee printer and 3D print management software and now, free access to our teacher tested  YSoft be3D Academy.
